The World Association of Girl Guides and Girls Scouts Asia Pacific Region provides girls and young women with fun and educational opportunities for developing life skills and leadership qualities, enabling them to become active members of their communities. WAGGGS has Member Organizations operating in 25 countries and there are 2.6 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in the region.
The Asia Pacific Region is incredibly diverse. Our network includes developed wealthy countries as well as developing regions trying to recover from the effects of war and natural disasters. Girls and young women in the region are dealing with various challenging situations. For example in India there is limited access to education for women, particularly in rural areas, resulting in poor rates of female literacy. The future of the environment is also a widespread concern. Recent natural disasters – such as the 2004 tsunami, the 2009 typhoon in the Philippines, destructive floods in Bangladesh, plus dangerously high sea levels in the Maldives – have made saving the environment a key priority for girls and young women in our network. Poverty is also a major issue: Asia and the Pacific is home to the largest number of hungry people at 642 million.
